“Documentaries… open windows that can make you understand much better where you come from, much better than fiction.” Mathew Reilly
Docs are one of the genres we both enjoy watching together!
Political or History

The Brainwashing of my Dad
Documentary, Relationships, Political
Watch, watch, watch!!
Released 2015, but this is still SO relevant today! This Doc is done respectfully, but thoroughly. What starts as a daughter’s personal journey became an exposé of a purportedly far-reaching phenomenon: a right-wing media ecosystem—backed by libertarian billionaires, conservative think tanks, and political operatives that begin to take over the minds of our loved ones. This is not just one family’s story, but a nationwide issue.
TRIVIA – Actor Mathew Modine (Full Metal Jacket & Stranger Things) was one of the producers.

Breakdown 1975
Documentary, History, Politics, Lifestyle, Music
A 2025 documentary that covers the ups and downs of the year 1975. It was interesting hearing the transition of the free love of the 60s to the selfish 80s. I always wondered how that happened, and it explains the boomer mentality SO MUCH. Was of course good to hear the details about the Vietnam War and the politics at the time, but fun learning about the movie scene which was OUTRAGEOUS! I didn’t know there were so many hits that year! So many, that we decided to start watching all the top hits from 1975.
TRIVIA – In 1975, Caroline Svendsen became the first woman to receive a boxing license in the United States.

Turning Point –
The Vietnam War
Documentary, War, Politics
Released in 2025, we started watching this after the details that we had heard in Breakdown 1975.
This series examines the consequences of the Vietnam War, from the Gulf of Tonkin incident to the fall of Saigon. Definitely a must watch to learn the US’s participation.
TRIVIA– During the war, U.S. Army teams that utilized Labrador retrievers, developed by the British, to track North Vietnamese troops and detect hidden booby traps.

Cults

Trust Me- The False Prophet
Documentary, Mormonism, Cult, Relationships, Women Centered
Trigger Warning- s**ual abuse
2026 Doc that is a great follow up to the ’22 Netflix series “Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey” which covers the downfall of Mormon “Prophet” Warren Jeffs (if you haven’t seen- go watch!). This story talks about a couple who come to live in the area, and help the women who were left behind when Warren was sentenced to live in prison. After he is gone, fellow parishioner Bateman proclaims himself a prophet, and announces Warren is speaking through him. He collected followers, and took multiple wives (including minors as young as 9). The couple who was helping began a documentary where they were secretly collecting evidence to use against him, but also keep the trust of the women. Watch to find out what happens….
TRIVIA– The sect was reportedly collecting nearly $300,000 per month for Bateman while he lived lavishly, which included nights out in Las Vegas, while his followers lived in poverty.

Docuseries, Romance, “Reality TV”
Started in 2022, and is a few seasons in. My kids encouraged us to start this show, and we are just on Season One! This series is about seven adults with autism who decide it’s time to start dating. Along with a therapist who helps guide them, they learn more about how they want to live their adult lives, but also learn a lot about themselves.

DIY, Educational
This show has been running since 1979!!! It’s constantly on in our house since it’s the first thing my husband puts on if he’s by himself (unless it’s Christmas and he puts on National Lampoon’s Christmas haha). Him and our grandbaby LOVE to watch it. In fact, the 4 year old will continue to watch it even after David goes on to something else.

Music

Nothin’ But a Good Time: The Uncensored Story of the 80’s Hair Metal
Doc, Music, Based on a Book, 80s
Released 2024, this is a three part show.
TRIVIA – Author Frank Herbert refused to let Iron Maiden use the title “Dune” for a song, allegedly due to his dislike of heavy metal.

Drama, Community, Relationships, Based on True Story
Based off of a HuffPost Article, this came out in 2022. This was on our list for awhile, and glad we watched it- especially with such a great cast, and a good, true story.
Newly retired, Jerry (played by Bryan Cranston, from Breaking Bad), figures out a math loop hole in the lottery system so starts betting big money. Eventually, him and his wife (Annette Benning, from The American President) decide to open a type of club to include their neighbors. When a group of college kids figure out the same tricks, the competition starts to break everything down.
TRIVIA– Annette married Warren Beatty in 1992 who used to quite the heartthrob! Now more of a recluse, he has a close relationship with his sister Shirley MacLaine (Steel Magnolias).
