“Even a man who is pure at heart and says his prayers at night, may become a wolf when the wolfsbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright.” The Wolf Man (1941)

The Boogeyman

The Babadook
Horror, Mystery, Grief, Woman Centered, Motherhood, Australian
2014 release about a widowed mother who is super struggling with being a single mother… especially with a very active child. One night they read a book about The Babadook who torments its victims. When strange things begin to happen, the son blames the monster… could he be right? GREAT movie!
TRIVIA – Financing was secured through Australian government grants and partly through crowdfunding.

Shortcut
Horror, Coming of Age, Mystery, Italian
Came out 2020 and I loved his one- seen it a couple times already!
Five teenagers trapped in a bus that broke down at the entrance of a tunnel, are pursued by an armed criminal… but suddenly they realize there’s something worse inside the tunnel
TRIVIA – The actor Andrei worked as a fitness model in the United States for a number of years before finding himself posing for romance novel book covers in New York.

Just what I was looking for in my search of “snowed in” books! Didn’t end how I guessed. Recommend!

Great Outdoors

Loop Track
Horror, Thriller, Breakdown, Creature Feature, New Zealand
2023 release Ian who is having a psychological breakdown, and just wants to get away from everything… only to be plagued by friendly hikers. He begins to have doubts and is suspicious of the others, but just because you’re paranoid, doesn’t mean they’re not after you. New Zealand humor is a little different, but I liked this one!
TRIVIA– The film was produced on a tiny budget, utilizing natural light and handheld cameras to achieve a documentary-style, realistic, and tense atmosphere.

Island Zero
Horror, Creature Feature, Maine
2018 movie about an island that is suddenly cut off when the ferry quits coming, and no other boats seem to be able to leave. When dead bodies start to show up on the island, they have to figure out what is killing them.
This was pretty good for a lower budget movie! Liked the cast and the reason around the movie title.
TRIVIA – All in the family! This was written by bestselling author Tess Gerritsen, and it was directed by her son Josh. Shot in 18 days, they shot in local homes, borrowed local buoys, and had nearly 200 community members watch the final day of shooting.

tttttttt
Light Horror, Creature Feature, Relationships
2014 release and one I’ve seen at least three times so far! It’s about a cop (played by Kevin Durand from Abigail) who is struggling with past trauma, so he’s not on his A game when strange things start happening in town. I REALLY like his deputy played by Lukas Haas (Witness). Great watch! SO wish there had been a part two.
TRIVIA – Shot in 20 days, the film was based on “The Devil’s Footprints” phenomenon that occurred in 19th century England. Mysterious hoof-like footprints appeared in the snow February 1855 in Devon, totaling an estimated 40 to 100 miles (60 to 160 km). The prints appeared to pass through walls and over rooftops, marking a route in a perfect straight line.

Horror, Dystopian, End-of-the-World, Woman Centered, Irish
2024. More Sci-Fi than Horror personally. The one scene with the diseased was brief. It’s about a woman who wakes up with no memory, but is pregnant. As she tries to remember, she realizes there is danger off their little island. This is pretty slow… found myself fast forwarding some scenes. REALLY liked the main character, but felt like they didn’t do a good job making her feel comfortable/safe when she woke up to make things work.

hhhhhh
Horror, Comet, Camp Slasher
2020 movie about kids at a rehabilitation camp for tech dependency. Years before, a comet had fallen and altered two boys. When something happens to their mother, they are now left to their own devices, and become dangerous to the public. Too bad the kids’ camp is so close…
I liked the sense of humor of the group, but it was a basic cheesy teen slasher trope.

Domestic

After Midnight
Horror, Thriller, Breakdown, Creature Feature, Relationships
2019 movie that gave me a little crush on the actor Jeremy Gardner leading me to watch Off Season, and The Battery (on my zombie page!).
After a long romance with his girlfriend, the character Hank wakes up alone, with a parting note. With her gone, his behavior becomes erratic as he slips into paranoia and loneliness. Is it just him?
TRIVIA– Jeremy sings a song in this movie (almost titled Something Else) that he also sang in The Battery.
Also, there’s a scene featuring a 14-minute, seemingly static shot, actually contains an almost imperceptible slow zoom.

Werewolf

The Wolf of Snow Hollow
Mystery, Werewolf, Comedy, Relationships
Came out in 2020, and I.LOVE.THIS.MOVIE. I have seen it multiple times, and will watch it again with you if you ask haha
Actress Riki Lindhome (who I first knew from the comedy duo Garfunkel and Oates) is in this, along with long time actor Robert Forster (Psycho).
It’s about a cop (Jim Cummings who I WISH had more movies to watch!) who struggles with an awful ex-wife, a teenage distant daughter, an ailing father who is the town’s sheriff, and a serial killer that the department is taking bets on is a wolf.
TRIVIA– Robert passed away after filming, so this was his last movie.

Howl
Horror, Trapped Space, Werewolves, England
2015 release about the last train out of London that stops abruptly when there’s something on the tracks… which just might be werewolves.
I liked this one! Likeable characters (aww the older couple), and good ending.
TRIVIA – Actor Sean Pertwee (Event Horizon), also was in the ’02 werewolf film Dog Soldiers

The Wolfman
Horror, Werewolves
2010 release with SO many top starts! Benicio del Toro (Sicario) Anthony Hopkins (Hannibal), Emily Blunt (Quiet Place), Hugo Weaving (Matrix)… even Gene Simmons (KISS!).
An actor who, after his brother’s brutal murder, returns from the United States to his ancestral homeland in England, where he gets bitten by a werewolf….
TRIVIA – A financial failure, though it won the Academy Award for Best Makeup

Wolf Man
Horror, Werewolves, Relationships, Family Trauma
2025 movie where wife Julia Garner (Weapons), her husband, and daughter go out to look at inherited property. After they are attacked, her husband begins to act strangely. What is more dangerous- what’s happening inside or outside?
TRIVIA – Whannell purposefully shot the film in extremely low light, instructing the lighting crew that the film was intended for theater-quality, deep blacks rather than for screens with the brightness turned down

Sinners
Horror, Drama, Music, Relationships, Time Period
2025 multiple award winner. I didn’t see this until it was showing during award week at the theater and LOVED IT. I immediately came home to make my husband watch. I don’t read anything about movies beforehand anymore so I seriously didn’t know the twins were both Michael B Jordan haha
This movie is three parts (which I think is why it confuses some). It’s about brothers coming back home after being successful in the “big city”, then it’s a beautiful musical that shows the power of song… then it’s a vampire movie! If horror is not your fav, close your eyes the couple times you’re uncomfortable, then push through! It’s a GREAT ending.
TRIVIA – Lars Ulrich from Metallica hopped on the drums for the score

Horror, Meteor, Comedy, Relationships, Zombie, Indie Film
2017 movie about two besties making “artsy” movies. When a contest for horror films throws out a great prize, and an unexpected change to their lives lands in the backyard (literally), they decide to take advantage of it.
I actually liked this movie! It was great to see Mena Suvari (American Pie and American Beauty)! I also REALLY enjoyed the mute best friend, and the assistant… who surprisingly has ONLY been in this ONE movie? With being a nominee for Best Actress in a Feature Film for the Festival Award, I think we’ll be seeing more of Emma Chasse.
