“I’m going to let you in on a little secret: Every day, once a day, give yourself a present.” Cooper, Twin Peaks
Drama is so much fun- it still has comedy, romance, and adventure! This is what we’ve been watching…
Period Drama

Train Dreams
Drama, Loss, Based on a Novella, Historical, Time Passing, PNW
2025 release about a hermit who is a logger in 1917, and the story of his life, and the world around him as it changes. This was such a good movie (nominated for SO many awards including Best Picture), so highly recommend watching undisturbed (no phone!) so you can feel everything.
TRIVIA– the Ranger he meets later is Kerry Condon (Night Swim) who was in an episode of The Walking Dead as the woman who lures Rick to her camp to feed to her husband.

ddddddd
Drama, Loss, Friendships, LGBTQIA+
2023 Directorial debut for Dan Levy who is one of my FAVORITES (if you haven’t seen the TV show Schitt’s Creek yet, stop EVERYTHING and go. Now. Only show I’ve watched beginning to end more than once). This cast is AMAZING, with a couple who I’ve enjoyed for a long time.
This follows a man who is in deep mourning, and the two friends who try to help him. But when secrets are discovered, friendships may not be as strong as they appear.
NOTE- my husband said this movie was in his TOP FIVE!
TRIVIA–The husband in the beginning is Luke Evans who plays Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the 2026 Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Show at Studio 54

dddddd
Drama, Love, Marriage, LGBTQIA+, Family Situations, Ageism
This was SUCH a good movie! Not by the normal standards, but we were so touched by their relationship, and their struggles on just wanting to live their lives together. Also, having to stay with relatives was so relatable!
This sweet movie is about a long time relationship couple who finally decide to get married. When they do, despite having always knowing he was gay, one of them is fired from their job. With a lost income, they are unable to keep their home, so have to live separate… which is heartbreaking.
TRIVIA– John Lithgow sings children’s songs, and my kids have seen him perform LIVE. Also, Alfredo Molina was in the FIRST scene of the Indiana Jones Movie as the guide who tried to steal the golden head from Indie. He also is in my husband’s FAVORITE movie- Maverick.

dddddd
Drama, Life Changes, Slow-Paced, Destination Movie, Relationships
2019- written and directed by Seth Green (left- from It & Enemy of the State), who has his heart broken by his unfaithful wife and decides to go on their anniversary trip with his oldest friend- played by Breckin Meyer (Clueless!). They meet wonderful people, and have amazing experiences while they are in Thailand, and in the middle of his heartbreak, he discovers many things about himself… and one of those is that he is not a good friend.
TRIVIA– Breckin Meyer went to grade school with Drew Barrymore, and is who introduced him to her agent which started with commercials

ddddddd
Drama, Political, War, Education, Journalism, Friendship
Released in 2007, I had forgotten I had seen this already until I was 1/2 way through. I’m a huge fan of Robert Redford (my childhood fav!), Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge), and Michael Peña (Fantasy Island movie).
It is a story told in three parts at the same time. One is a student arguing with his teacher, another is a journalist (Meryl Streep) talking to a slimy politician (Tom Cruise who I hate), and the third is two best friends who decide to join the military… despite us being in Afghanistan.
TRIVIA– Andrew Garfield lost his mom to pancreatic cancer which was really hard for him. He did an episode about grief with Elmo- see here.

Mystery/Crime

Why Women Kill
Dark Comedy, Drama, Mystery, Crime, Women Centered, LGBTQIA+ (1st season), Based off a Book, Anthology TV Series
2019-21. Despite a successful two seasons, it was cancelled for #3 (as of 2026- maybe it will be picked up again elsewhere?).
The 1st season is an anthology of 3 different timelines, but all in the same house. This was SO good! I liked season 2 also where it focused on one family, with different storylines (such great cast!), but one was best.
TRIVIA – Every Season 1 episode title is a parody of a movie line, and Season 2’s are named after 40/50s film noirs

yyyyyyy
Award Winning Short Film, Drama, Music
2025 OSCAR WINNER! Because they were nominated, we decided to watch it, and loved it! It’s a short movie so I’m not going to tell you what it’s about… if you hate it, just push through haha
TRIVIA– Instead of traditionally famous singers, they used viral singing talents and subway buskers curated from TikTok and YouTube

uuuuuuu
Drama, Life Changes, Disconnection, Relationships, Japan
Released in 2025, we loved this movie! As Brendan said “It will make you feel like family is really who we include, rather than who we are assigned to.”
Struggling to find work, an American actor gets a job with a Japanese agency to play stand-in roles for strangers. As he immerses himself in his clients’ worlds, he begins to form genuine bonds that blur the lines between performance and reality. Confronting the moral complexities of his work, he soon rediscovers purpose, belonging, and the quiet beauty of human connection.
TRIVIA– Brendan took Japanese lessons 3x a week to prepare for his role!

Drama, Community, Relationships, Based on True Story
Based off of a HuffPost Article, this came out in 2022. This was on our list for awhile, and glad we watched it- especially with such a great cast, and a good, true story.
Newly retired, Jerry (played by Bryan Cranston, from Breaking Bad), figures out a math loop hole in the lottery system so starts betting big money. Eventually, him and his wife (Annette Benning, from The American President) decide to open a type of club to include their neighbors. When a group of college kids figure out the same tricks, the competition starts to break everything down.
TRIVIA– Annette married Warren Beatty in 1992 who used to quite the heartthrob! Now more of a recluse, he has a close relationship with his sister Shirley MacLaine (Steel Magnolias).

Sci-Fi, Aliens, Loss, Action, Drama, Supernatural Beings, 80’s
1984 release and directed by John Carpenter (Halloween & The Thing)! Grew up watching this quite a few times, and finally got the chance to show the youngest kiddo.
A grieving widow is awoken in the middle of the night to a glowing ball that becomes a child, and grows into an adult that looks just like her husband. A supernatural being, he heard the recordings that NASA had sent out into space, but his ship was destroyed. The “mother ship” is coming to get him, so he has to rendezvous a few states over. The widow, at first unwillingly, decides to help him get there as they are chased by the government.
TRIVIA– Karen Allen, whose parents were a teacher and an FBI Agent also plays Marion- the great love of Indiana Jones.
